Kelan's Puzzle Main Character

Tools: Autodesk 3DS Max, Blender, Substance Painter, Nomad Sculpt, Procreate

This is the process followed for creating a controllable player character for my game 'Kelan's Puzzle.' The model was further optimized through retopology and was chosen to be kept flat-shaded as a stylistic preference.


1. Creating 2D orthographic references

2. Sculpting the base mesh

Progressively adding more details.

3. Box-modelling the first layers of clothing
The body mesh served as a mannequin for creating tailored clothing for the main character.

Decided to overlay the shirt with a dungaree!

4. Modelling additional clothing, apparel and accessories.

5. Retopology
Parts of the model were individually optimized, either through manual or automatic retopology, depending on the surfaces. This helped reduce the poly-count to around 70,000.

9. Animating
Animations were quickly executed on the model to identify and address issues with the topology.
